How to activate SQLCMD mode?

For the Current Query Window

Open SSMS and connect to your database.

Open a New Query window or select an existing one.

Click on Query in the top menu bar.

Click SQLCMD Mode from the dropdown menu.

(You will know it is active because the background of your SQLCMD commands, like :setvar or :connect, will turn gray).

Enable by Default for All New Windows

Go to the top menu and click Tools > Options.

In the left sidebar, expand Query Execution > SQL Server.

Click on General.

Check the box that says "By default, open new queries in SQLCMD mode".
